Black Is King is an upcoming film and visual album directed, written and executive produced by American singer Beyoncé. The film serves as a visual companion to the 2019 album The Lion King: The Gift, a tie-in album curated by Beyoncé for the 2019 remake of The Lion King. Black Is King will be released globally to stream on Disney+ on July 31, 2020, and will be aired across Africa the following day on M-Net and Canal+ Afrique.

Already, a dancehall-infused banger melds Ghanaian reggae artist Shatta Wale’s African roots with Bey’s confident vocals and Major Lazer’s signature production. “Be your own king/ Make nobody come rule your world,” Wale repeats on the song’s final refrain, reminding listeners to never shy away from taking up the crown.

On June 27, 2020, it was announced that Beyoncé has written, directed and executive produced a visual album, titled Black Is King, that will premiere globally on Disney+ on July 31, 2020. Produced by Disney and Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment, the film is based on the music of The Lion King: The Gift. Black Is King was described by Disney as “a celebratory memoir for the world on the Black experience.

The film is a story for the ages that informs and rebuilds the present. A reunion of cultures and shared generational beliefs. A story of how the people left most broken have an extraordinary gift and a purposeful future”. A one-minute teaser trailer for Black Is King was released on June 27 on Beyoncé’s official website. The film features various cameos, including by Blue Ivy, Jay-Z, Kelly Rowland and artists featured on the album.

Black Is King was written, directed, and executive produced by Beyoncé, and weaves in contributions from creators like Ghanaian director Blitz Bazawule and Oscar-winning production designer Hannah Beachler—who made history in 2019 as the first Black designer to win in her category, thanks to her work on Black Panther.
