“The Media Does Not Support The Comedy Genre In Ghana – Comedian Waris

Published

GREATER ACCRA – Tuesday, April 14, 2020/www.gbafrica.net/ – Sensational Ghanaian stand-up comedian and actor, Abdul Majid Waris, known for his craft as, Comedian Waris, has expressed a gross level of displeasure and dissatisfaction in the “truculent or uncooperative behaviour” of some Ghanaian traditional media practitioners towards the Comedy and poetry genre in the country’s entertainment ecosystem.

According to him, the comedy and poetry sector has been denied the necessary support and publicity from the the mass communication outlets, such as print media, the news media, broadcasting, bloggers and art writers, as they are only interested in propagating and elevating the good works from the music and movie industry. This he explained, is fast deteriorating the comedy genre in the country.

This comes after the government of Ghana through the ministry of communications initiated a virtual show without including Stand-up comedians to entertain patrons alongside the musicians. In a series of tweet, Comedian Waris noted that, the negligence of comedy and poetry on the path of the media has made the role comedians play in entertainment industry not visible enough to attract corporate entities to invest in their craft.

The comedian also noticed that, in the wake of the outbreak of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), a lot of the traditional media houses, including the bloggers hosted a virtual interview via their various social media handles to check on the welfare of musicians and movie stars and possibly share their forecast with their respective fans, but the comedians weren’t granted these services.

Comedian Waris, believes that this kind of attitude is not healthy to the comedy sector and has urged entertainment journalists to refrain from it.
