“The Global Music Industry Should Be Paying Particular Attention To Ghana”- Sipho Dlamini

Published

on

Newly-promoted CEO of Universal Music in both Sub-Saharan Africa and South Africa, Sipho Dlamini in an interview he granted Music Business Worldwide said Ghana should be the focus of Global Music Industries. He stated that there is such a strong Ghanaian diaspora population in the UK and beyond – and Ghanaians are also very passionate and very dynamic in their music and in their sound.

He mentioned that Ghanaian artists like Sarkodie and Stonebwoy are doing amazing things and getting recognition and support in other markets. Another artist doing amazingly well is Fuse ODG who has nearly 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify and that’s significant. Since Universal Music Africa extended their hands towards Ghana they’ve been able to put on board Cina Soul, Kidi, and Stonebwoy.

Six years ago, Universal publicly committed to investing in Africa as a priority global region. Ever since, barely a month has gone by without a major move by UMG on the continent.

Universal Music Group Nigeria is the West African division of global record label Universal Music Group founded in 2017. It has its corporate headquarters located in Victoria Island, Lagos. The label has signed at least seventeen artists from various African countries.

Ghanaian dancehall act, Kamelyeon, has bitterly blamed the global pandemic for his active work on stage. Though he believes the whole new virtual experience of performances are also cool, he does miss the real one-on-one connection with the fans while performing on stage. He was on interview with Kweku Delicious on Pan Africa TV on Thursday, January 21, 2021.

“I really miss performances that engage my audiences directly. And I blame COVID-19 for it. If this virus were not to be with us by now I would have been out there playing different stages back to back and finding more platforms to promote my ‘Rainbow’ EP. My streaming numbers for the EP are looking good but I am an artiste who loves to engage my fans directly and that comes with the gigs and engagements with them face to face”, Kamelyeon lamented.

His 6-tracked EP has crept over 60,000 streams on Audiomack, Boomplay Music and YouTube. He launched it on November 13, 2020. Listen to his “Rainbow” EP here: https://mipromo.ffm.to/kamelyeon-rainbow
