According to The Verge, Netflix, Inc; an American over-the-top content platform and production company has signed a multiyear deal with Kevin Hart and his production company HartBeat Productions for four exclusive films starring Hart and first dibs on films the comedy star develops with his company. Hart had partnered with Netflix earlier for his comedy special Zero F**ks Given, which Netflix says was the “#1 Netflix comedy special in 2020

In the report, this new deal would bring the lucrative comedy star even deeper into the fold as Hart’s films have grossed a combined $4 billion in the global box office, according to Netflix, so taking advantage of that star power to draw users to the streaming service and keep them around makes perfect sense.

Relying on recognizable comedy stars has been a successful formula for Netflix. Adam Sandler’s deal with the company has produced films that consistently rank among the top of Netflix’s charts. Sandler’s films on Netflix have been so popular that Netflix has renewed its deal with the former SNL star twice just to keep him around. Beyond that, Hart and Sandler share a similar broad appeal, generally enjoyed by all ages in the US and fans around the world. As Netflix expands globally, films with stars who are recognizable everywhere become more and more important to keep growing its subscriber base.

Hart’s not without his controversies — most notably, a pattern of homophobic behavior (and tweets) that cost him a gig hosting the Academy Awards in 2019. The star has since acknowledged his mistakes, but Hart’s past remarks could be a concern for some Netflix subscribers.

The comedy scene in Ghana has grown exponentially over the past few years. Ghanaians have accepted the crafts of the comedians and it is a beautiful sight to see. Ghanaians come out in their numbers to support, once upon a time when comedy shows in Ghana used to record less than 10 people, today, comedians can boast of filling an auditorium.

Over the weekend DKB organized his annual comedy show, “New Year Comedy Night”. A show which is in its second year and comedians billed on the night thrilled fans with rib cracking jokes leaving them gasping for breath after each act. However, though the show was a massive success, the highlight of the show was not only the performances but the fact that the auditorium was full to the point monies had to be refunded because there was no place to sit nor stand.

Those who arrived late had the burden of forfeiting the show because covid 19 protocols were observed in the auditorium and organizers couldn’t afford breaching it. The overflow of patrons was a statement of how far comedy has come in this nation. Speaking with DKB about whether he expected this huge number of attendance he said he was expecting a full house. He was however humbled when he learnt about the overflow of patrons.

“There was an overflow and we had to refund some monies to people who couldn’t be part of the show. I was expecting a full house, what I wasn’t expecting was that many people outside the show and that number can fill the auditorium for a second show. I was humbled when I heard that number. It was a statement of how far Gh comedy has come” he said.

The event happened at the Alisa Hotel, North Ridge, Accra. Performing on the night were DKB, OB Amponsah, Lekzy DeComic, Comedian Waris, MjTheComedian, PJay and Ranzy. The host for the night was the versatile Clemento Suarez and he was partnered with the beautiful Matilda Hipsy. There was also music performances from Keche and Mr Drew. New year comedy night was sponsored by proudly Ghanaian company Kasapreko with their Royal drinks and was also supported by Infinix mobile.

As per the commitment of the poetry community on the need to bring spoken word and poetry to the main stream entertainments activities in Accra, Rhymesonny and his team is putting together the RETORIKA show at the plush Alisa Hotel, North Ridge, Accra on the 26th of December, 2020 .

RETORIKA (Rhetoric) is the art of persuasion, which along with grammar and logic, is one of the three ancient arts of discourse. It aims to study the capacities of writers or speakers needed to inform, persuade, or motivate particular audiences in specific situations.

This year’s event is the second edition and it aims at encouraging poets to ‘DO MORE’ than just the performance of spoken word within a great space but to commit to excellence, innovation and diversity in the art and it’s significance in education, entertainment and information dissemination as a tool for social change. It will explore elements of painting, lingual, drama, dance, opera music and classical jazz as ad-on effects for the enhancement of poetry and spoken word 

In all effort, this concert is meant to create a platform to exhibit the very best poetry and spoken word artistes in Ghana including Poetra Asantewa, Apiorkor, Vitus, Nakeeyat (Talented Kidz fame), Jeffery Nortey, Amaze, Rhymesonny and a US based international Spoken Icon Yaw Kyeremateng known as King Yaw. The finest and multi talented Reynolds the Gentleman will be there to give great music as well.

The major advantages of this show includes, the first and biggest dedicated platform for poetry and spoken word during this Christmas festivities and thus should attract the many poets, writers, poetry lovers and the general public.

In a recent interview with BBC, Kenyan new comedy sensation, Bridget Bema, revealed that her dream profession is become a pilot. According to her, she wants to fly and navigate airplanes, helicopters, and other types of aircraft and will also use the opportunity to travel to other countries across the globe. She added that, being a pilot is challenging and rewarding.

Bridget Bema is a 9-year-old Kenyan child comedian and the younger sister of popular Kenyan Comedian Oliver Otieno, professionally known as YY Comedian. The video of her that went viral is not a real-life scene like many believe but a comedy skit of her elder brother. You will all agree that her performance is Oscar-worthy.

She started her comedy acting career a few years back when she began featuring on her brother’s skits. The majority of their comedy skits are centred on education and set in a school. This is because YY comedian is passionate about education and believes he can use his platform to promote literacy in Kenya.
