Rema, Master KG, Burna Boy Nominated For “Best African Act” At MTV EMA

Published

It’s no secret that 2020 has been an absolutely WILD year so far. From virtual livestream performances to the birth of a plethora of amazing quarantine content, the world sure has rolled with the punches and embraced these unpredictable changes. Obviously, the MTV EMA will be no different. The prestigeous awards ceremony is back on November 8th, 2020 for this year’s show – get ready for a night of jaw-dropping performances from the hottest artists while celebrating the power of music in 2020.

The nominations for the 2020 MTV EMA are finally here. The competition is UNREAL at this year’s show. This year’s list seems to be the most contested, African giant and 2019 MTV EMA winner Burna Boy is nominated yet again. Fellow Nigerian rapper, Rema at the age of 20, has also secured a spot. Afrobeats artist Sheeba from Uganda is the only female featured on the list for her song “Nakyuka”. Gaz Mawete is last on the list and flies the banner for Democratic Republic of Congo.

Nigerian artists have been sweeping the Best African Act four years in a row. Burna Boy won in 2019 and Tiwa Savage made history by being the first Black African female to win in 2018. Davido scooped the award in 2017.

Making a first entry, “Jerusalema” hit maker, Master KG, has secured a favourable spot in the list. Fellow South Africans, Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa known for their contagious and influential amapiano beats have also made the list. Statistically speaking, the category looks less competitive for the South African musician as “Jerusalema” featuring Nomcebo Zikode has collected over 150 million views on YouTube.

This year 2020 has been a good year for Kwesi Arthur as he joins in on the BET Hip Hop Cypher representing the motherland Ghana.

In 2010, Ghana was well represented in the BET Hip Hop Awards taking the Ghanaian rap heat to the international scene. The cypher featured Ghanaian acts; D-Black, Edem, Tinny, The grandpapa Reggie Rockstone, Kwaku T, and Baby G. ‘The African Invasion’ was the name of the cypher.

Ghana DJ Awards To Host Workshop; Leonora Buckman Encourages Females To Partake In The Seminar

Published

on

President of Women In Performing Arts (WIPA) – an umbrella organization for all females in the creative arts industry, Leonora Buckman, is urging more females to take up DJing as a profession in Ghana.

Leonora Buckman, who also serves as a board member of the Ghana DJ Awards has been a leading advocate in championing the cause of women in Ghana’s creative arts industry.

She lamented the dearth of female DJ role models in the country during an interview about this year’s Ghana DJ Awards on Peace FM’s entertainment review show.

She further stated that “though DJing is dominated by males, it is not a profession reserved for males. We, therefore, encourage female DJs out there to involve themselves in the nomination process. We believe that what a man can do, a woman can also do”.

According to research conducted by the Blogspot, Female Pressure; only 10% of performers at music festivals around the world are female and an even smaller percentage of women are on music label rosters.

Despite female DJs pumping out great mixes and working as hard as they can, the recognition from booking agents and promoters – and the subsequent gigs and success – remain elusive and for the few female DJs, they may have at some point felt like it’s close to an impossible task in front of them.

Due to the phenomenon stated above, Leonora Buckman encouraged females interested in disc jockeying to participate in the Ghana DJ Awards workshop which is scheduled for the 20th of November, 2020, in order to get well acquainted with the practice.

The workshop will discuss such topics such as how DJs can manage their funds, the importance of social media, sound management and brand positioning. The event will also include training sessions on how to operate as a DJ, select music, beat matching, and equalising music, as well as general education on sound and mood curation. Registration details for the workshop will be announced on Monday via Ghana DJ Awards’ Facebook and Instagram platforms. The workshop will start from 9am to 5pm (GMT).

The 2020 Ghana DJ Awards is however scheduled to take place on November 21, 2020.

Ghana DJ Awards – 2020 To Honor Outstanding Student Disk Jockeys

Published

on

The board and organizers of Africa’s biggest DJ festival, the annual Ghana DJ Awards event have introduced a new category, to recognize the efforts of student DJs who entertain their colleagues and fans during raves and events, both on and off-campus.

The “Best Student DJ” of the year award is part of the new categories introduced in this year’s edition of the award scheme, to encourage students who juggle the demands of life while going to school and working to earn their dues as DJs simultaneously.

This disclosure was made by Rev Azigiza Jnr, chairman of the Ghana DJ Awards board, on Peace FM’s entertainment review show. According to him, “the Best Student DJ category was created to reward outstanding student DJs who despite their inability to own expensive gadgets, are still able to rip the turntables”.

The goal is to motivate Student DJs to believe in the profession and also inform the DJing fraternity that education is key. A DJ can be professional and educated as well. To be nominated, one must be a student or recent graduate in good standing and be over 17 years.

Nominations for this year’s edition are selected by the Ghana DJ Awards’ board and the voting academy which is comprised of fans and an esteemed group of entertainment industry players. Fans will be able to cast their vote for their favorite DJs via text on ghanadjawards.org and on both Twitter and Instagram with a designated hashtag.

This year’s edition of the Ghana DJ Awards is set to take place on the 21st of November, 2020. More details will be communicated soon.

Organizers of Humanitarian Awards Ghana, have conferred a citation in honor of Rocky Dawuni.

Rocky Dawuni — who hails from Ghana and has traveled the world thoroughly has impacted so many lives and led countless global initiatives in Ghana and beyond, championing humanitarian causes. The global activist who sees himself as a ‘messenger of the world’ has also empowered many youths and generations through the influence of his music, which is mostly directly towards consciousness, peace, love, unity and socio-economic empowerment.

Apart from being a GRAMMY Nominee, Rocky Dawuni, is also a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Environment for Africa. Though he was not present at the venue, his Ghanaian publicist, Elorm Beenie, was present to receive the award on his behalf.

Rocky Dawuni is wrapping up his next album (EP) project due for release this October 2020. He has already released 7 albums and has featured on many other notable albums and projects by various musicians across the world.

The prolific Humanitarian Awards Ghana lived up to its billing and hype. The event, which was held at the plush Labadi Beach Hotel to celebrate change makers, followed all the prescribed Covid-19 protocols set by the government of Ghana without losing its class and ethos.

The special guest of honor, Mama Francisca, delivered a great speech on the need for humanitarian works to support the less privileged and make this nation a better place.

She cautioned that Ghanaians to strive for peace in the upcoming elections on 7th December as Ghana needs peace.

There were sterling performances by notable musicians and talents such as Dada Kwaku (Dada K), Bernice Offei (Gospel Minister), Nakeeyat Dramani Sam (Nakeeyat The Poets), Paa Sammy (Gospel Minister) Rhymesonny (Poet), Comedian Hogan and Derrick Baah (Live Painting.)
