A father and son have been arrested and charged in the US state of Georgia for the fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed black man.
Gregory McMichael, aged 64, and Travis McMichael, aged 34, were detained on Thursday by the state bureau of investigation.
Both were charged with murder and aggravated assault, investigators said in a statement.
Mr Arbery, 25, was jogging in February when he was confronted by the pair.
For more than two months, police did not charge the McMichaels, who is white, until the shooting gained widespread attention in the national media and provoked outrage.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced late on Thursday that both men had been taken into custody. The bureau said the father and son followed Mr Arbery and confronted him with two firearms, and the younger McMichael shot and killed him.
How did Arbery die?
Mr Arbery was out running in the coastal city of Brunswick early in the afternoon of 23 February. Gregory McMichael told police he saw Mr Arbery and believed he resembled the suspect in a series of local break-ins.
Mr McMichael and his son armed themselves with a pistol and a shotgun and pursued Mr Arbery in a pick-up truck. Gregory McMichael told police he and his son said: “stop, stop, we want to talk to you” and claims Mr Arbery then attacked his son.
Video footage of the incident appears to show Travis McMichael firing a shotgun at point-blank range at Mr Arbery and the victim falling to the street, in the Satilla Shores neighbourhood.
MIAF Releases Report On Financial Impact Of COVID-19
The Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) today released a report on the financial impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on the African music sector over March and April.
The report (attached below) predominantly captures the financial impact of the pandemic on music professionals since the outbreak of the virus and introduction of restrictions on the broader African continent from about 1 March 2020. It also provides an overview of the immediate needs of affected practitioners, while anticipating further impact and offering useful tips and recommendations from industry operators.
The 30-page report is based on data collected over a one-month period, from 1 April to 30 April 2020, through an online survey, industry consultations and case studies in both Francophone and Anglophone Africa. Some 503 respondents from 47 countries took part in the survey, representing various sub-sectors of the African music industry at individual and organisational level.
At the core of the findings is that the pandemic is having a devastating impact on the sector, with all respondents reporting that they have accrued losses since the beginning of the crisis. Many individual professionals (40%) reported losses ranging between $1 000 and $5 000, and some organisations reported losses exceeding $1m. The research also found that most of the affected practitioners did not have any alternative sources of income. Sixty-four percent of individuals and 70% of organisations and companies said they had no other means to generate income. Conversely, 36% of individuals and 30% of organisations and companies indicated that they had alternative sources of income during this challenging period. The report indicates that a majority of respondents (87%) need relief support to survive.
The MIAF asked a number of music industry professionals to react to the survey’s findings and give recommendations about how the sector should strategise during the ongoing pandemic and plan for the future. Input from the professionals helped to shape a balanced report that the MIAF hopes would be useful to stakeholders as they endeavor to navigate the effects of the pandemic.
Established in 2013, the MIAF has implemented numerous projects in line with its mission to support African music professionals, including, but not limited to, mobility funding, artist exchange programmes, training, conferences, research, artist promotion and information dissemination via the Music In Africa portal. This year, the MIAF is planning to introduce a project titled Revenue Streams for African Musicians, which will enable music professionals to identify new revenue models and improve their earning capacities.

In many cases, though, entertainment business owners—by which we mean individual artists and creators, or owners of entertainment-related businesses, like production companies—secure their funding without creating debt. Zero-debt financing can take a few forms: You can seek investors to put up their money in return for equity in your business or project; or solicit generous strangers to donate small amounts of their own money.

With that primer in mind, here are just a few of the best options for entrepreneurial artists seeking entertainment business loans:
For most artists and creators, the safest route toward securing at least part of your required finances is through a crowdfunding platform, like Kickstarter or Indiegogo. Depending on the platform you choose and the nature of your project, you can provide your backers with rewards in return for their donations, like an advanced copy or demo, merchandise, a ticket to the premiere, a commissioned art piece, or a cameo in your project. Often, rewards increase in value (and work, on your end) along with the dollar amount your backer pledges.
There are so many upsides to crowdfunding. First off, as long as you’re aligned with your particular platform’s guidelines, virtually every creator is eligible for this form of financing. And in addition to receiving money for your project, creating a crowdfunding campaign is an excellent way to forge a community of guaranteed fans and supporters even before you deliver your product—a boon for every artist hoping to publicize their work. You can also use your crowdfunders as a testing ground and receive valuable, direct feedback about your project.

Angel investors are individuals who offer up their own wealth to help early-stage businesses and projects they believe in get off the ground. In exchange, angels often take equity in the business. Depending on the investor and the stake they take in your project, they may expect a key decision-making role in your processes or, at the very least, they’ll provide their guidance and expertise.
Business owners will often need to leverage their personal and professional networks to find angel investors. Prepare a detailed loan agreement or promissory note so they understand that you’re legally bound to repaying their contribution, and don’t be afraid to solicit the help of an attorney if need be.
Kiva loans are a kind of hybrid between crowdfunding and an alternative lending platform. This 501(c)(3) nonprofit is an online lending platform that offers businesses and individuals with 0% interest loans up of up to $10,000, with repayment terms ranging between three and 36 months. Like a crowdfunding platform, loan funds come from individuals who can browse the Kiva site and contribute to the causes they believe in. Unlike a crowdfunding platform, however, those lenders will receive their money back, according to a repayment schedule determined between Kiva and the business owner.
While several types of businesses and initiatives can be eligible for a Kiva loan, the platform intends to create funding opportunities to the individuals who are often excluded from traditional lending institutions, or who simply don’t have access to traditional forms of financing—including women, refugees, IDPs, and business owners in developing nations and conflict zones. But even if you’re not one such business owner, you may be a good match for a Kiva loan if your project is inherently socially conscious or environmentally responsible. And, if it makes sense for your project’s needs, take a few minutes to apply for a business credit card online and start separating your business and personal finances. South Africa Delays Schools’ Reopening By A Week.
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, June 1st, 2020/www.gbafrica.net/ South Africa has delayed the reopening of schools by a week to allow school administrators more time to prepare.
Final year students in primary and secondary schools will now report back to school on 8 June, according to the Department of Basic Education.
Teachers will report to work on 1 June for orientation on new safety guidelines intended to prevent the spread of coronav!rus in schools.
Boarding school students who have already gone back for the initial opening this Monday have been advised to stay for the orientation on safety.
South Africa is moving to “level three” of the easing of lockdown restrictions, with the sale of alcohol and movement within districts allowed from Monday.
Churches, temples and mosques have been allowed to reopen provided they have no more than 50 worshippers.
The basic education ministry said the reopening date was delayed after consultations and the minster in charge, Angie Motshekga, is expected to give more details later on Monday.
Teachers had asked the government to reconsider the reopening date citing lack of preparedness.
Parents in various Twitter posts had said they would keep their children away from school for fear they might contract the virus.
